Dream of the West

A History of the Chinese in Oregon 1850-1950

This book is dedicated to the Chinese immigrants and their hardships.

The Chinese have made significatnt contributions to the rich history of Oregon for over one hundred years, but unfortunately the impact of Chinese presence in Oregon has remained largely unwritten and the documentation of their participation is scattered throughout the state, In 2002, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) worried that if such artifacts, stories, photographs, and other documentation were not consolidated, they could be lost forever. With this concern, the CCBA established a committee to spearhead the gathering of these historical artifacts.

The committee members were Gene Chin ( Chin, Gee Mun) Steven Louie (Louie, Poy Sun) Mary Leong (Leong, Lee Sun Nom) Stephen Ying (Ying, Shu Kei) and Richard Louie (Louie Shiu Cheong). Michael Chang (Chang, Chi Wei) was appointed to head the committee. The committee decided that all funding for the project would be the sole responsibility of the CCBA which is a non-profit organization.

After a year of working on the project independently, the committee approached the History Department at Portland State University (PSU) to participate and guide the research project. In 2003 the History Department of PSU formulated a special project team led by professors Dr. Ann Fulton, Dr. Linda A. Walton, and Dr. Douglas Lee. They set up a Capstone program and recruited three graduate researchers and twenty students to study and write about

the historical Chinese presence in various regions: Southern Oregon, Eastern Oregon, Portland and Astoria.

When the essays were complete, the CCBA and the Capstone program at PSU contacted Ooligan Press., the PSU publishing program, to publish the book. Students in Ooligan's program were responsible for consolidating the four essays into a cohesive whole, checking to make sure all the current research was accurate, further researching possible gaps in the text, compiling and cataloguing photographs for the text, and laying out the final design.

After four years and much hard work by all parties a book has been completed which clearly tells the stories of the Chinese immigrants and the communities they developed in the State of Oregon. This book represents many hours of effort by members of all the project teams.

I would like the take this opportunity to show our appreciation and thank all members of the CCBA and the students, faculty, and staff of PSU who served on this project for their dedicated efforts that led to the completion of this book.

CCBA Research Committee.
